Winter Tree & Shrub Pruning

Pruning is arguably one of the most important and misunderstood treatments that arborists perform on plants. Too often pruning is undertaken without establishing a clear goal beforehand. Some valid reasons for pruning include improving safety, containment of growth, disease suppression and addressing structural flaws.

A common misconception is that pruning can only be done during the spring and summer months. In fact plant dormancy and the winter season offers perhaps the best opportunities for evaluation and performance of pruning tasks. Winter PruningIn deciduous trees and shrubs the leaves have fallen and photosynthesis has stopped until spring bud break. Sugars that were produced and stored in the leaves have moved down to the roots for winter storage. This means that live branches can be removed without stressing the plant, affording us great opportunity to modify a plant's structure and direct next year's growth. After the leaves have fallen, better visibility makes it easier to evaluate plant form and structure, improving our pruning decisions and the resulting effects on plant growth and long term health. Also, most insects and diseases are not active and, therefore, are less likely to be spread or attracted to pruning wounds. Finally, frozen ground allows improved access for equipment.

Many trees warrant protective measures to help ensure their longevity and their valuable contribution to the landscape. Professional pruning can alleviate safety concerns and improve tree health by removing decaying and structurally deficient limbs. Proper pruning of your trees is essential to maintain their beauty, improve their longevity and increase the safety of your surroundings.
